When your kidneys are not working properly, waste and extra fluid build up in your blood. Dialysis removes these substances and helps you feel better. Dialysis can be used short-term to treat an acute kidney injury or for the long term to manage chronic kidney disease.
Hemodialysis treats your kidneys by removing the waste and extra fluid from your body through a filter called a dialyzer. The dialyzer has two parts, one for your blood and the other for a washing solution (dialysate). A semipermeable membrane separates these areas. Larger waste particles, such as protein and blood cells, stay in your blood, while smaller particles move through the membrane into the washing solution, where they are washed away. The dialysate then returns to your blood, and the cycle begins again. You can have hemodialysis at a dialysis center, in your hospital or at home. You and your doctor will decide which place is best for you based on your medical condition and your wishes.

Getting ready for dialysis can be emotionally challenging as well as physically demanding. It requires a major lifestyle change and may require you to limit your activities and give up some of your responsibilities. Creating a support system and seeing a mental health counselor can help you cope with these challenges. Also, practicing proper hygiene and making sure you have a clean catheter site will help prevent infections.
